INFORMATIVE NOTE
A telephone information centre is also operating within the administrative and organisational structure of the Department of Tourism Police of Athens, under call number “1571”.
It provides information in English, French, Italian and Spanish, as well as in all other languages, since the caller can be put through to the corresponding Embassy or tourism enterprises or guides or the foreign language department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the operator is informed by the interpreter and then provides the relevant information.
By way of example, the services provided by “1571” include:
• Promotion of all forms of tourism in our country (conference, agro-tourism, sports, sea, therapeutic/medicinal, ecotourism etc.) by providing all types of information relating to the travel and stay of tourists in our country (hotels and other types of accommodation, transportation, sights, archaeological sites, museums, beaches, ski centres, tourist agencies, car rentals, recreation etc.);
• Provision of general information, such as radio taxis and taxi fares, pharmacies open all night, hospitals, gas stations, small and large traffic ring, boat schedules and transportation in general, foreign exchange etc.;
• Provision of instructions or solutions to various complaints or problems faced both by foreign and domestic tourists, usually relating to poor provision of services or inappropriate conduct of employees of tourism enterprises, violation of agreed price, refusal to book a room, loss of items from hotel rooms etc.;
• Service and promotion of the National Greek Tourism Organisation (social tourism, festivals etc.);
• Promotion of the tasks of police agencies and other public agencies, organisations and bodies (port and fire-fighting agencies, healthcare services, local authorities, Hotel Chamber of Greece, Association of Hotel Owners of Athens-Attica, O.S.E., O.A.S. etc.);
• Transmission of complaints or information on narcotics, wanted persons etc. to the competent Security Agencies, which take over the cases;
• Provision of legal information on tourism legislation or general matters.
